Every order creates a separate ticket

A box covers all eligible finishing orders among the selected horses. Four horses in a trifecta box create 4 × 3 × 2 = 24 combinations. At $0.50 each, the total cost is $12. A five-horse superfecta box creates 120 combinations and costs $12 at a $0.10 base.

Build a wheel by finishing position

Choose the horses allowed to finish first, second and later positions. A ticket cannot use the same horse twice. The tool counts distinct valid orders, so simply multiplying group sizes is wrong when those groups overlap. Fixing one position to one horse creates a keyed wheel.

Ticket cost is not a forecast payout

Pari-mutuel returns depend on the pool and winning tickets. Horse count alone cannot determine a trifecta or superfecta dividend. Enter the official gross dividend and the unit it was quoted for, then scale to your winning unit and subtract the entire ticket cost.

Read common box costs

A three-horse exacta box has six combinations. A four-horse trifecta box has 24, a five-horse trifecta box has 60, and a six-horse superfecta box has 360. Minimum permitted stakes vary by event; the examples are arithmetic units, not current track rules.

Exacta, trifecta and superfecta box cost charts

An exacta selects the first two finishers in order; a trifecta selects three; a superfecta selects four. The box contains every eligible order. For n selected horses and k positions, the ticket count is n! / (n−k)!. Multiply by the base stake, not by a forecast dividend.

10-cent superfectas and 50-cent trifecta examples

A five-horse 10-cent superfecta box covers 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 = 120 orders and costs $12. A six-horse box has 360 orders: $36 at ten cents, $360 at $1, or $720 at $2. A four-horse superfecta has 24 orders.

A four-horse trifecta box has 24 orders: $12 at 50 cents, $24 at $1, $48 at $2 and $120 at $5. Five horses create 60 orders ($30 at 50 cents); six create 120 ($60); seven create 210 ($105); eight create 336 ($168).

A three-horse exacta box has six orders; at $2 it costs $12 and at $5 it costs $30. A six-horse exacta box has 30 orders. These figures explain cost only; scratching, coupled entries, dead heats and permitted minimum units depend on the product.

Exacta, trifecta and superfecta key and part wheels

In wheel mode, enter eligible horses separately for each finishing position. Key one horse by allowing only that horse in its fixed position. The same horse cannot fill two positions on one ticket.

A trifecta key with horse 1 first and horses 2, 3, 4 eligible in each later position contains 3 × 2 = 6 orders. A superfecta key with horse 1 first and four other horses filling the next three positions contains 4 × 3 × 2 = 24. Overlapping part-wheel groups must be counted after rejecting duplicate horses.

How to calculate exacta, trifecta and superfecta payouts

Read the official gross dividend and its quoted base unit. Winning return = dividend × your winning unit / quoted unit. If a trifecta pays $240 per $1 and your winning unit is $0.50, the winning return is $120. If the entire box cost $12, the net is $108.

A box payout chart cannot forecast the winning dividend from the number of horses. Pool size, deductions and winning stakes determine that amount. Use the same scaling for a Derby superfecta or another named race after checking its official dividend.

Racetrax superfecta payout scaling

Racetrax uses its published payout schedule. Find the finishing order in the official Maryland Lottery superfecta chart and enter its $1 payout in settled-payout mode with a quoted unit of $1.

The Maryland Lottery payout instructions say to divide the $1 superfecta prize by ten for a $0.10 wager or by two for a $0.50 wager. Enter that winning unit in this tool. Optional Bonus multipliers need the actual ticket and game result; ordinary pool dividends must not be substituted for this named game’s published schedule.
