ICM proportional finishing model; does not account for skill, position or future decisions.
How the independent chip model values stacks
ICM assigns first-place probability as a player’s chips divided by total chips. For later places, it removes each possible earlier finisher and repeats that proportional allocation. Multiply each finishing-place probability by its payout and add to obtain that player’s modeled prize equity.
For stacks 5000, 3000 and 2000 with payouts $500, $300 and $200, the chip leader has $383.93 ICM equity, not the $500 first prize or simply half the $1000 prize pool. All player equities sum to the entered pool.
Chip equity versus a tournament payout structure
Enter positive stacks and descending nonnegative payouts, including zeros for unpaid places. ICM ignores skill differences, positions, future blind costs and deal conditions. It values a stated stack distribution; it does not solve a push/fold equilibrium.
Use the tournament payout calculator to decide finishing-place amounts before applying ICM. Read the Independent Chip Model explanation for the model’s tournament context.
