Illustrative inputs. Results depend on the assumptions shown.

Divide the call by the final pot

With $100 already in the pot and $25 to call, the final pot would be $125. The break-even equity is $25 divided by $125, or 20%, before rake and future betting.

Include the opponent’s bet once

The input is the pot immediately before your call. Include the bet you are facing and exclude your own new call. Adding the opponent’s bet twice changes the denominator and gives the wrong threshold.

Implied odds need more assumptions

The simple threshold assumes no more betting and no additional costs. Potential future winnings, reverse implied odds, side pots and tournament considerations require information this calculation does not include.

Pot odds versus outs and future betting

When the pot already contains the opponent’s bet, a $25 call into $100 creates a final $125 pot. Break-even equity is 25/125 = 20%, not 25/100. This assumes no further bets, rake or separate side pots.

Outs estimate a chance to improve, while equity measures your share of the final pot. A card that improves your hand can also improve an opponent’s hand. Use the known-hand poker equity calculator to account for competing hands and ties; do not replace an equity calculation with a count of apparent outs.
