Betting markets explained
Understand what a stated sports betting market settles before using an odds calculator. Outcome definitions and payout prices answer different questions.
What does win to nil mean?
A team to win to nil must win the match while conceding no goals in the market’s stated period. Scores 1–0 and 3–0 meet that condition for the winning team; 2–1 does not. A 0–0 score is not a win. Check whether the market covers regulation time, extra time or a particular half.
Asian handicap and two-way handicap examples
A −1.0 handicap win requires the selected team to win by at least two; a one-goal win pushes. A −0.5 win requires any outright win. A −0.25 stake is split equally between 0 and −0.5: a draw pushes half and loses half. A −0.75 stake is split between −0.5 and −1.0: a one-goal win wins half and pushes half.
A three-way European handicap includes a handicap-draw selection, while a two-way market can push on an integer line. A two-way handicap soccer price does not necessarily represent the same selection as a three-way price.
| Selection | Match result | Gross return | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| −0.25 | Draw | $10 | −$10 |
| −0.75 | Win by 1 | $30 | +$10 |
| −1.0 | Win by 1 | $20 | $0 |
| −1.0 | Win by 2 | $40 | +$20 |
1X2 and double chance
1 denotes home win, X draw and 2 away win. Double-chance 1X covers home or draw, X2 draw or away, and 12 either side winning. Use the no-vig calculator for all three prices. Do not multiply overlapping double-chance probabilities as if independent.
Player shots, booking points and highest scoring half
Player shots and shots on target are different statistics. A saved shot may count as on target; an attempt off target ordinarily does not. The designated statistics provider and market rules decide edge cases, participation requirements and settlement.
Booking points convert disciplinary events into a table of point values defined by the operator. Do not assume a universal yellow/red-card scale. Highest scoring half compares goals in each half; equal totals require the market’s tie-selection or push rule. Definitions explain settlement, rather than predict which half will have more goals.
