Illustrative inputs. Results depend on the assumptions shown.

Equalize the two net outcomes

A $20 original bet at decimal 5.00 has a $100 potential gross return. At opposing odds of 2.00, a $50 second stake produces $30 net either way, before costs, under the two-outcome assumptions.

Use the whole original ticket

For the final leg of a parlay, use the original ticket’s stake and its full potential return. Do not treat the final leg as if its price alone represented the original ticket.

A third outcome changes the problem

The example requires exactly two opposing outcomes and compatible settlement. A draw, a middle, a void or a partial cash-out needs a different calculation. Equalizing a result can also lock in a loss.

Parlay hedge versus cash-out value

If an original $10 ticket can return $200 and the opposing outcome is priced at 2.50, an $80 hedge equalizes the result at $110 net: $200 − $10 − $80 if the original wins, and $80 × 2.50 − $10 − $80 if the hedge wins.

The two bets must cover opposing outcomes under compatible rules. A draw, handicap middle or partial settlement needs a separate calculation. Compare a quoted offer using the parlay cash-out calculator.

Equalizing a loss is still a loss

Equal stakes are not necessarily an equal hedge. A $20 original ticket at 1.50 can return $30. At opposing odds of 2.00, a $15 hedge makes both net outcomes −$5: $30−$20−$15 if the original wins, or $30−$15−$20 if the hedge wins.

The second stake equalizes two modeled outcomes; it does not create a profitable position. Check cash-out value separately when you have an actual offer, and include every possible settlement such as a draw or refund.

Compare a custom hedge with equal net outcomes

Choose the odds format first. Leave Custom second stake empty to balance both outcomes, or enter any amount including zero to compare a partial hedge. For original stake S, original decimal price D and second stake H at opposing price O, the two net outcomes are S × D − S − H and H × (O − 1) − S. The balancing stake before cent rounding is S × D / O.

Original example: $20 at 5.00, opposing price 2.00, no commission
